Solicit feedback.

Here’s the thing about reviews — they all matter. They help legitimize your business and give you a chance to grow your reputation. Now, more than ever, consumers rely on online reviews to provide insight into a brand’s reliability. As we’ve previously mentioned, if you have few or no reviews, it can give a potential customer pause. Boost consumer confidence by having current customers leave you reviews. Invite them to leave feedback on places like Yelp, Google and Facebook. You can then cross-reference those positive reviews on your website. Always respond to your reviewers in a thoughtful way. This shows positive reviewers that you are grateful, and negative reviewers that you are paying attention.

Speaking of negative reviews, it is essential that you don’t lose your cool when you’re responding to unhappy feedback. Thank the reviewer for their comments, and offer a way to rectify the situation if possible. You can take the conversation offline to get their story. If appropriate, apologize for their experience and offer a chance to make it up to them with a refund, discount or exchange or other remedy. If a person is unwilling to accept any recourse, then at least you have tried to earn their satisfaction.

Reviews are a great way to get a better understanding of where your business stands. In our next installment, we’ll tell you how to turn feedback into actionable learnings that can help you improve your business.
